Signature Series is our top of the line flags. For these flags we use an ancient woodworking technique called, Yakisugi, sometimes referred to as, Shou Sugi Ban. This technique can only be completed by hand. First the wood is lightly charred. Then it’s carefully hand sanded to bring out the natural color of the wood grain. Next, we meticulously raise the grain. The texture of the wood becomes multi-dimensional and the colors fall into place on the wood as it rises up through the char. This Asian woodworking technique also naturally makes the wood resistant to water and insects. There are buildings in Japan that were crafted with this technique (made only of wood) and after many hundreds of years...they still look as though they were built yesterday.
